News from FIA - vol. 1, issue 1

Letter from the President

Welcome to our first issue of News from FIA

Back in the day, an occasional newsletter from FIA would arrive by old fashioned snail mail. In today’s digital world, we are giving up paper and going electronic!  As with any first issue, it’s a work in progress, but we are aiming to share FIA news with you that is relevant, readable, and timely. Please help us get it right by taking a minute to click on subjects of interest to you in the Reader Survey below.

FIA was founded in 1955 by passionate Fire Islanders who successfully stopped Robert Moses and his plan to build a road from one end of the island to the other.  Sixty-eight years later, we are still working diligently for what matters to all of us—preserving and protecting the island we love.  FIA got the FIMI renourishment project built, and helped Island stakeholders navigate through COVID. Without FIA, the recently approved 25-year Fire Island to Montauk Point (FIMP) shoreline management plan would still be collecting dust on the Army Corps shelf.

Despite these successes, there are still multiple issues for FIA to focus on—climate change, sea level rise, environmental stewardship, zoning and building codes…  As we ramp up our efforts to manage the challenges, we really want to know which topics are most important to Fire Islanders. So take the survey below.  It’s a simple, quick and easy way to tell us what matters most to you, your family and friends.

Thanks so much for your support, have a great summer….. and enjoy News from FIA!

Warm regards,

Suzy Goldhirsch
