In this issue you’ll read about:

• Determined Fire Islanders who organized to defeat Robert Moses’ plan to build a road from one end of Fire Island to the other.

• The Army Corps dredges that are on the way to rebuild our East End dunes and beaches.

Our goal is to keep you informed about topics that matter to all Fire Islanders. After tropical storms Lee and Ophelia pummeled our beaches and dunes three weeks ago, we circulated an FIA UPDATE with pictures of the damage up and down the island. We also reported on the coordinated efforts by FIA, our six eastern communities, Suffolk County, and our elected officials to urge the Army Corps to add repair of the severely damaged east end beaches to their currently scheduled project to restore the west end shoreline.

Welcome to our first issue of News from FIA. Back in the day, an occasional newsletter from FIA would arrive by old fashioned snail mail. In today’s digital world, we are giving up paper and going electronic!  As with any first issue, it’s a work in progress, but we are aiming to share FIA news with you that is relevant, readable, and timely.
